Booked non-smoking but the room reeks of old cigarette smoke — demand a move or air it out overnight?

Booking said non-smoking. Room smells like someone smoked in here for years — curtains and pillows. Desk shrugged and said open the windows. Do travelers push for another room the same night, ask for fresh linen only, or just air it and cope? Practical hotel desk reality, not invented penalty fees.

Ask calmly for another non-smoking room the same night — show the booking note if needed. Many desks can move you if occupancy allows; if not, request fresh linen, spare pillows, and a fan while they check inventory. Opening windows alone rarely clears years of curtain smell by morning. I will not invent a room-move fee as gospel. Polite firmness beats a fight at midnight; document the smell with a quick note to the booking channel if they refuse any help.

Asked once, firmly, for a different room. They had one. Problem solved.

Aired and swapped pillows first night, moved at breakfast when smell lingered.

Photo of the ash-stained sill plus the non-smoking confirmation. Move approved.

Linen-only fix was not enough. Curtains held the smell. Push for a move.
