Booking.com said USD 70, checkout wants 22,000 extra rupees??
Boutique place in Galle. Rate was USD 70. Bill has 10% service, 1% TDL, 2.5% SSCL, 18% VAT stacked. Is this a tourist tax they invented or real?

If the place is SLTDA-registered and VAT-registered the stack is real: up to 10% service, 1% Tourism Development Levy (0.5% for smaller turnover), 2.5% SSCL if they are over the turnover line, 18% VAT on the running total. Not every guesthouse charges all of it. Family places often quote a round LKR number cash. Ask "is tax included?" before you tap the card. Booking.com sometimes shows the room-only number.
TDL is not a departure tax. It is a levy on the business they pass onto the bill. Embarkation is a different line on the air ticket.
We asked, they knocked it to a cash LKR price. Still not cheap. Next time I filter "taxes included".

Someone befriends you and offers a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to buy gems at wholesale prices and resell them abroad for huge profit. They may show you fake export certificates. The gems are worthless glass or low-quality stones.
Restaurants without visible prices. Bill arrives with inflated charges (500 LKR coconut becomes 1500 LKR). "Service charges" added without disclosure.
