Bopath Ella (30 meters high), located near Kuruvita in the Ratnapura gem basin, is an extraordinary geomorphological landform. The cascade derives its name from its uncanny resemblance to the leaf of the sacred Bo tree (Ficus religiosa). The Kuruganga river flows over hard, erosion-resistant charnockitic gneiss before encountering a narrow joint cleft formed by brittle tectonic faulting. Water is compressed through a 1.5-meter fissure at the crest, accelerating in velocity before spreading radially across a flared, outward-sloping concave rock face, forming a wide belly that tapers into a thin stem at the plunge pool.
The deep plunge pool contains strong submerged recirculating back-eddies; swimming directly beneath the falling water column is prohibited by local police.
Upstream flash floods from the Adam’s Peak wilderness catchment can strike Bopath Ella within 15 minutes, turning clear spray into a brown torrent without rain falling at the base.
The site is located 3km off the main Colombo-Ratnapura highway, featuring paved access steps lined with local sweetmeat and tea stalls.
