Created by brothers Bevis and Geoffrey Bawa, Brief Garden and Lunuganga represent two distinct philosophies of Sri Lankan tropical landscape architecture. Brief Garden (created by artist Bevis Bawa in Beruwala) is an intimate, jungle-dense retreat spanning 5 acres. It is designed as a series of sensual, enclosed outdoor garden rooms linked by narrow winding paths, filled with homoerotic and whimsical concrete sculptures, open-air garden bathrooms, and a mural by Australian artist Donald Friend. In contrast, Geoffrey Bawa’s Lunuganga (at Dedduwa Lake) is an expansive 15-acre architectural country estate influenced by English Romantic and Italian Renaissance gardens, featuring broad water vistas, classical vistas, and sculpted lawn terraces.
