Actually a common experience — Sri Lankan public buses break down monthly. Locals wave down passing buses (usually stopping); driver typically arranges alternate bus. As tourist: stay with the group (safety in numbers), share small snacks, learn a bit of Sinhala. Total delay usually 1-3 hours.

Stay with group + flag next bus. Thanks!

If really stranded (rural stretch, hours to next bus): flag any passing vehicle (including trucks — normal here), or call your accommodation via WhatsApp for local advice. Villages have generous hospitality. Do NOT panic-hitchhike solo late at night — wait for buses or accommodation pickup instead.
