I want to see the Kolam masks being made. Are there workshops that offer short classes for tourists to try the carving and painting process.

The Ariyapala Mask Museum in Ambalangoda is the best place for this. They have a permanent workshop where masters carve the Kaduru wood. You can arrange for a half day session where you learn the basics of carving or the specific vibrant painting techniques used for the Raksha masks. It is a fantastic way to understand the folklore and the protective symbolism behind each character.

The museum itself is free and shows the evolution of mask dancing in the south. Buying a mask directly from the workshop ensures you are getting the traditional light Kaduru wood rather than heavy, cheaper imitations sold in some souvenir shops.
