I want to try carving a traditional Raksha mask. Are there studios that offer half day classes for beginners.

Yes, the Ariyapala Mask Museum is the most famous spot for this. They offer workshops where you can see the masters at work and then try carving the light Kaduru wood yourself. Painting sessions are also available if you prefer the artistic side over the woodwork. It is a wonderful way to learn about the different characters like the Fire Devil or the Cobra King. A half day session usually costs about three thousand rupees.

Make sure to wear old clothes as the natural dyes and wood dust can be quite messy. It is best to book at least a day in advance through your guesthouse in Hikkaduwa or Ambalangoda.
