We are arriving at noon. Is it possible to see the main archaeological sites like Gal Vihara and the Royal Palace by bike before the site closes.

Yes, cycling is the absolute best way to see Polonnaruwa as the ruins are grouped closer together than in Anuradhapura. You can rent a bike for around six hundred rupees at the entrance. Start with the Quadrangle and save Gal Vihara for the late afternoon light which is beautiful for photos of the stone Buddhas. The park is mostly flat and shaded by large trees.

Be careful of the monkeys near the Vatadage as they are quite bold and will try to grab food from your bike basket. Keep your belongings secure and always carry enough water as there are few shops inside the ruins area.
