Yes you absolutely can and should buy your alcohol the day before. However every local resident is doing the exact same thing. The local wine stores become incredibly chaotic and heavily packed with long lines starting from late afternoon.

To avoid the massive crush of people trying to stock up at the last minute it is highly recommended to buy your beer or arrack early in the morning the day before Poya. Keep it in your hotel mini fridge to enjoy peacefully the next day.
