Cash or card in Sri Lanka in 2026 and which ATMs do not eat my fees

Cards (Visa/Mastercard) work at most hotels, mid-range and up restaurants, supermarkets and bigger shops in cities and the south coast. But cash is still king for tuk-tuks, small eateries, village guesthouses, park entry and street vendors. Carry rupees. For ATMs, Commercial Bank and Sampath generally have higher withdrawal limits and reasonable charges; some banks cap withdrawals low which means more fees. Always choose to be charged in rupees, never in your home currency (decline "dynamic currency conversion").
The airport exchange rate is actually not terrible compared to many countries, but only change a small amount there to get you started, then use ATMs in town for the rest.
Grazie. Will carry cash for tuk-tuks and use Commercial Bank ATMs, declining the currency conversion.
Bring some clean, newer US dollars or euros as backup; torn or old notes get refused at exchange counters. And keep small rupee notes, drivers and vendors often claim to have "no change" for a 5000.
