The natural balance of saline water and halophilic anaerobic bacteria breaks down pectins, hemicelluloses, and polyphenols without degrading high-lignin structural cellulose filaments. Hand-beating the softened husks on wooden logs yields long, resilient, golden-blonde bristle fibers prized for high-tensile marine ropes. Rapid mechanical decorticators use crushing drums that fracture individual fibers, producing shorter, darker brown fibers suitable only for low-tensile mattress padding.
