Traditional water-retting involves burying mature green coconut husks in coastal brackish lagoons or tidal pits along the southern coast for 8 to 10 months. The natural balance of saline water and halophilic anaerobic bacteria breaks down pectins, hemicelluloses, and polyphenols without degrading high-lignin structural cellulose filaments. Hand-beating the softened husks on wooden logs yields long, resilient, golden-blonde bristle fibers prized for high-tensile marine ropes. Rapid mechanical decorticators use crushing drums that fracture individual fibers, producing shorter, darker brown fibers suitable only for low-tensile mattress padding.
The ecological downside of coastal retting pits is heavy hydrogen sulfide outgassing and organic sludge that depletes dissolved oxygen in shallow fishing channels.
Washed coir pith (coco peat) extracted as a byproduct of this process is exported worldwide as a sustainable peat moss replacement in hydroponic organic farming.
