The Old Dutch Hospital in Colombo Fort, constructed in 1681 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to care for sailors and officers, is one of the oldest heritage buildings in the capital. The structure was restored by the Urban Development Authority, preserving its 50cm-thick coral and brick walls, massive teak roof purlins, round clay barrel tiles, and colonnaded open verandas surrounding two wide open-air central courtyards. Today, it operates as a vibrant dining and lifestyle precinct, anchored by Ministry of Crab, serving lagoon mud crabs sorted by weight (from 500g up to 2kg "Crabzilla").
