During the Southwest Monsoon (May to September), dense air masses channeled across the Dumbara valley are forced through this narrow mountain col. The physical constriction creates a textbook atmospheric Venturi effect, accelerating wind velocities up to 50 knots (over 90 km/h). Continuous mechanical wind shear and desiccating moisture loss prune tree canopies, creating an extreme pygmy forest where century-old Rhodomyrtus and Syzygium trees grow only 1 to 2 meters tall with twisted, horizontal branches.
