If showers are still around at 6:53 PM, do we claim a shop doorway or stay on the open curb with rain gear.

Ask the shop keeper first and stand to the side so customers can pass; a doorway is a courtesy, not a reserved seat.

We stood in a doorway last night and felt in the way every time a customer came; tonight we will take the curb and step back only when a burst hits.

Open curb with ponchos is fine if you want the full view; pick a stretch with a doorway one shop back as a rain duck-in.
