They inhabit fast-flowing, heavily shaded lowland blackwater streams draining rainforest fragments in Kalutara and Ratnapura districts. They grow submerged or amphibious in gravel beds composed of coarse quartz sand and granite pebbles. Pristine populations demand acidic, soft water (pH 5.2 to 6.4, electrical conductivity under 40 microS/cm). Fertilizer runoff from adjacent rubber or tea estates raises nitrate and phosphate levels, causing filamentous algae blooms that smother their underwater spathes.
