Dad has knee issues - Sigiriya no-climb option or skip entirely?
3 Answers from travellers
Two options. (1) VIEW option: climb Pidurangala Rock (the opposite hill), which is 30-45 minutes moderate scramble vs Sigiriya's 1.5-2 hour climb. Photos of Sigiriya Rock in landscape are actually better from Pidurangala. Still requires some climbing but a fraction. (2) SKIP the summit but see the site: enter the Sigiriya complex, walk the gardens and moats (flat), see the frescoes gallery from the mid-level (accessible via short stairs, not the full climb). Pay full entry but stop at frescoes. Beautiful and skips the harsh climb. Combined with a hot-air balloon over Sigiriya at dawn = actually the best 'no-climb' Sigiriya experience possible.
^ hot air balloon is legit if budget allows ($200-250/person). See the rock from above at sunrise. No climbing needed. Or Pidurangala at sunrise (dawn light on Sigiriya Rock from Pidurangala = the iconic shot). Sometimes better than climbing Sigiriya itself.
