Kids are done by nine on a normal night. Dahawal Perahera is listed 2:18 PM on Friday 28 Aug. Festival ends after that. Kids will last a day one and not a night one. Please pick the kinder version, even if it is less 'the real one'.

Poncho, not umbrella. Umbrella on Ampitiya Road edge during Dahawal Perahera is how you start a fight. If showers look likely, a later Kumbal is not automatically cancelled — they run wet. Dahawal is the day procession at 2:18 PM, not a night replay. Kinder for kids and elders, harsher sun. No Saturday Kandy restart after it. Water in the bag beats a maybe stall.

We took the Colombo-Kandy morning reserved train, dumped bags, and were on Ampitiya Road edge by four. Unreserved in Perahera week is a maybe. Sit. Then tea, then the room.

One night only: I would still pick a Randoli over a Kumbal if you can stand crowds, and a mid-Kumbal if you cannot. Dahawal Perahera at 2:18 PM from Ampitiya Road edge is a real night either way. One pin, not three maybes.
