If showers look likely, a later Kumbal is not automatically cancelled — they run wet. Dahawal is the day procession at 2:18 PM, not a night replay. Kinder for kids and elders, harsher sun. No Saturday Kandy restart after it. Shoes you can stand in, not the pretty pair.
We took the Colombo-Kandy morning reserved train, dumped bags, and were on Queen's Hotel lake-side balcony by four. Unreserved in Perahera week is a maybe. Sit. Leave a margin for the walk back.
One night only: I would still pick a Randoli over a Kumbal if you can stand crowds, and a mid-Kumbal if you cannot. Dahawal Perahera at 2:18 PM from Queen's Hotel lake-side balcony is a real night either way. Bags change the trade — dump them.
