The historic Dambatenne aerial ropeway (engineered in the 1890s under Sir Thomas Lipton in Haputale) revolutionized tea leaf transport across steep mountain terrain. To haul freshly plucked leaf from high ridgelines (1,900m at Lipton's Seat) down to the factory floor (1,500m), engineers strung continuous steel wire cables over intermediate lattice steel pylon towers spanning deep ravines. The system operated by gravity: descending heavy cages filled with green leaf pulled empty returning cages up the counterbalanced loop, governed by manual band brakes at the upper terminus.
