The ticket office for foreign tourists is located at the base of the rock near the modern Golden Temple museum, NOT at the top. You must purchase tickets (approx. 2,000 LKR / 10 USD) before beginning the 15-minute stone staircase climb; tickets cannot be bought at the upper shrine entrance. Modest dress covering both shoulders and knees is strictly enforced; sheer shawls or wraps are scrutinized. Shoes and hats must be checked at the upper counter (fee of 100 LKR) before stepping onto the sacred granite courtyard.

Toque macaques line the staircase; do not carry exposed food, flowers, plastic bags, or open drink cans, which provoke aggressive lunges from monkey troops.

Flash photography is prohibited inside all five cave shrines to preserve natural mineral murals; never pose for photos with your back turned to Buddha statues.

Midday granite courtyard flagstones become scorching hot under the sun; wear thick socks to protect bare soles while walking between cave entrances.
