We want to camp at Pitawala Pathana in Riverston, but heard the wind is extreme. What type of tent is needed, and are there homestays nearby in Ilukkumbura where we can buy a traditional Pittu breakfast the next day.

The Pitawala Pathana plain acts like a massive wind tunnel. Do not use high-profile family dome tents; you need low-profile, aerodynamic alpine or geodesic tents with sturdy aluminum poles. After you survive the night, drive down the mountain to Ilukkumbura village. The small homestays near the Thelgamu Oya river make incredible traditional steamed Pittu served with spicy tripe curry or lunu miris for breakfast.

The weather there changes in 10 minutes. You can go from scorching sun to freezing sideways rain. Pack high quality waterproof gear.

Leeches are rampant near the water sources in Riverston. Bring soap water or Alum powder to spray your hiking boots.

If your tent collapses in the wind, just pack up and head to a homestay in Ilukkumbura. You can safely swim in the Thelgamu Oya river right behind their houses instead.

Also, do not camp too close to the edge of Mini Worlds End. The drop-off is totally unfenced and the wind gusts are unpredictable in the dark.
