We hailed a tuk tuk outside Galle Face Green in Colombo. The driver agreed to take us to a restaurant but halfway there he claimed his meter was broken and demanded 3000 LKR for a short trip. How to avoid this.

This is the most common scam in Colombo. Never get into a tuk-tuk without seeing the driver physically press the meter down to 120 LKR (the starting fare). If they say it is broken or offer a "special tourist price", walk away immediately. If they pull the broken meter trick mid-ride, firmly tell them to stop the vehicle, pay them 200 LKR for the distance covered, and get out. Always use rideshare apps like PickMe or Uber for guaranteed rates.

Tuk-tuks parked directly outside tourist hotspots like Galle Face, major hotels, or the Dutch Hospital are almost always looking to scam. Walk 50 meters down the road and hail a moving tuk-tuk; they are much more likely to use the meter fairly.
