Dialog eSIM activated in Colombo but zero bars past Haputale — Mobitel physical SIM for the hills?

eSIM worked from CMB through Kandy. After Haputale toward Ella the data dies for hours at a time. Need maps offline is not enough — WhatsApp the driver. Should I buy a Mobitel physical SIM in Ella/Bandarawela, or is this just a one-day outage?

Hill pockets eat signal on every network, but travelers often find one operator holds a ridge better than another. Dialog eSIM is convenient in cities; for patchy Haputale–Ella stretches many people add a cheap Mobitel or Dialog physical SIM as backup and keep Wi-Fi calling ready. Bring your passport to an official shop, not a random pavement seller. Download offline Google Maps anyway. If you need reliable calls to a driver, SMS/WhatsApp over any bar is the goal — dual-SIM phones win. I cannot promise continuous 4G on every hairpin; I can promise a second SIM has saved more hill itineraries than refreshing an eSIM QR.

On the train line we tell tourists: screenshot the ticket and meeting point. Signal drops in cuttings even when the coast was perfect.

Bought Mobitel physical in Bandarawela. Still not perfect, but WhatsApp to the driver finally sent.
