The easiest way to tell them apart is the architecture. Hindu temples, known as Kovils, feature massive, towering entrance gates called gopurams that are entirely covered in hundreds of brightly painted, intricate statues of various deities and mythological figures.

Buddhist temples are generally much more minimalist from the outside. They are characterized by massive, smooth white dome structures called stupas, serene white buildings, and large, ancient Bodhi trees wrapped in prayer flags in the courtyards.
