'X yanne kohomada?' (how do I go to X?), 'X koheda?' (where is X?), 'meya... paare?' (is this... the road?), 'labath?' (nearby?), 'durada?' (far?). Show address in Sinhala script on phone helps. English also works nearly everywhere.

Locals often walk you part-way or find someone else who knows. Head bobble means yes/understood. Gesture-and-numbers combo: fingers for turns, palm for straight. Google Maps offline works well but locals sometimes give more accurate current directions.
