Do I need a fuel QR if we self-drive a tuk for a week?

AU government site still has a whole thing about National Fuel Authorisation QR codes. We are tempted to rent a tuk for a week. Will we be the idiots who cannot buy petrol?

Tourism-sector vehicles are supposed to have arrangements. Private hired cars with a driver almost never make you tap a QR. Self-drive tuk or car is the case where you must ask the rental shop: is this vehicle registered, do you have the QR, who puts the petrol in. If they shrug, rent something else. Advisories still say fuel for personal motor vehicles can be limited. SLTDA 1912 if you get stuck.

Our driver handled every pump. We never saw a 2022 queue. I still would not self-drive the hills in August rain as a first-timer.
