Don't arrive in Kumana after dark hunting a machine. Pull extra in a big town. Some ATMs eat cards then sit empty. Keep small notes for tuks.

HNB/Commercial in bigger stops worked for us. Treating cards as backup, not plan A, saved the Kumana evening.

If you're tired, stay nearer the bus stand / town centre in Kumana and skip chasing a perfect sunset. Pull cash in Colombo, Kandy, or Galle first — cards are a maybe. Locals will tell you if a ticket is counter-only.
