During the exact peak days of the Avurudu festival usually April 13th and 14th almost all local independent shops tiny cafes and family run supermarkets will completely close as staff return to their home villages.

However massive tourist hubs like Unawatuna or Ella remain largely unaffected. Large tourist hotels and luxury resorts will absolutely remain fully open and continue serving meals perfectly normally to their foreign guests.

You absolutely must stock up on bottled water snacks and essentials a few days beforehand. The streets in major cities like Colombo become incredibly quiet and deserted.
