In very small, hyper local restaurants often called hotels in Sri Lanka, a service charge is almost never included in the bill. While tipping is not strictly mandatory there, leaving some cash on the table is highly appreciated.

If you are eating at a more upscale tourist cafe in Colombo or Galle, they will automatically add a 10 percent service charge to the final bill, so an additional cash tip is completely optional.

Leaving a tip of roughly 10 percent, or simply rounding up the bill and leaving the 100 or 200 Rupee notes as change, goes a massive way for the hardworking staff in these cheap local eateries.
