I am a serious coffee enthusiast used to quality specialty cafes. Does Sri Lanka have a decent coffee culture beyond the famous tea and where can I find quality espresso drinks.

Sri Lanka has actually developed a surprisingly vibrant specialty coffee scene in recent years particularly in Colombo, Kandy, Ella, and Galle. Cafes like Barista Colombo, The Commons Coffee House, Black Cat Cafe in Ella, and Pedlars Inn Cafe in Galle Fort serve genuinely excellent espresso drinks using quality beans from both international sources and small local estates in the hill country. Expect to pay around six hundred rupees for a quality flat white.

Did you know Sri Lanka once dominated the world coffee market before a devastating fungus wiped out the plantations in the 1870s prompting the switch to tea? Small scale coffee cultivation has been revived in places like Knuckles and Haputale producing unique single origin beans. Visit Hansa Coffee and The Warehouse in Colombo to taste authentic Ceylon coffee and learn about the fascinating historical revival.
