Freshly tapped morning coconut toddy has a very low alcohol content, usually around 2 to 4 percent, similar to a light beer. It is sweet and mildly fizzy. However, if you drink toddy late in the afternoon or evening, it has fermented significantly in the tropical heat, turning sour and reaching up to 8 percent alcohol or more. If you drink several glasses of heavily fermented evening toddy, you will absolutely experience a harsh, throbbing hangover the next day. Stick to a single glass of fresh morning toddy if you have to drive.
