The Dondra Head lighthouse is located just a short drive from Matara and marks the absolute southernmost tip of the island. While the grounds surrounding it are incredibly beautiful and open to the public for photography climbing the actual tower is currently restricted. The port authority no longer allows general tourists to climb the internal spiral staircase due to safety regulations but visiting the base and looking out over the endless Indian Ocean is still highly recommended.
