Have long enough shorts but they're clearly shorts. And t-shirts. Buy sarong or push it?

Push it, but marginally. Temple of Tooth is stricter than most temples. Rules: shoulders covered, knees covered. Knee-length shorts technically pass but you'll get looked at (and possibly told to buy a sarong at the gate). T-shirts are fine (short sleeves ok as long as shoulders covered - which they are with a t-shirt). Just buy the sarong (200 LKR at the entrance, cotton, reusable). It's a beautiful souvenir and takes the guesswork out. Wear white or subdued colors if possible.

^ get the sarong. Also it's 200 LKR, take it home. If you're doing multiple temples in Sri Lanka, one sarong lasts the whole trip. Way easier than debating each temple's specific rule.
