We rented a standard 198cc Bajaj Tuk Tuk. Can it handle the steep, narrow climb through the Dambatenne tea estate up to Liptons Seat in Haputale for the sunrise tea tasting.

A 198cc 4-stroke tuk-tuk can handle it if you drive smart. You must stay in first or second gear for the steep hairpin bends. Do not slip the clutch, or you will burn it out. If the engine smells hot, pull over at one of the estate viewpoints and let it cool for 15 minutes before continuing the climb.

Coming down is actually more dangerous than going up. Use engine braking by staying in a low gear. If you ride your brakes all the way down the mountain, they will overheat and fail.

Watch out for the local tea pluckers walking on the narrow estate roads early in the morning. Always yield to them and give a friendly wave.

Get there by 6:30 AM before the mist rolls in! The small stall at the very top serves fantastic fresh black tea and hot roti. It is the best breakfast view in Sri Lanka.
