Local so the food sensitivity picture and it is good that you care The short version you are very unlikely to offend anyone by what you eat in a normal restaurant context the cuisine is diverse and tolerant but a little awareness is respectful BEEF the sensitive one BEEF is the one to be mindful of for many BUDDHISTS and HINDUS the cow is respected and eating beef is avoided or frowned upon (Hindus revere the cow Buddhists often avoid beef out of respect) so beef is NOT widely eaten by the majority though it IS available (Muslim and some Christian establishments and some restaurants serve it and it is eaten by some communities) what to do you will not offend anyone by ordering beef in a place that serves it (if it is on the menu it is fine to order) BUT do not go asking for beef in a devout Buddhist or Hindu vegetarian or strict household setting and be aware it carries sensitivity if you want to be extra respectful you can simply favour the other meats it is a personal choice no one will confront you but the awareness is appreciated PORK PORK is avoided by MUSLIMS (not halal) so you will NOT find pork in Muslim run establishments (and the halal places the halal threads) do not expect or ask for pork in a Muslim restaurant pork IS eaten by some other communities and available in some places so as with beef order it where it is served not where it is not What is commonly eaten CHICKEN and FISH and SEAFOOD are the everyday widely eaten and universally fine meats (fish especially given the island) MUTTON (goat) is common and fine EGG and the wonderful VEGETARIAN and vegan food (the veg threads) is everywhere and never an issue Easiest respectful approach if in doubt FISH CHICKEN egg and VEGETARIAN are safe universally accepted and delicious choices that sidestep all sensitivity (and the fish and veg curries are the best of the cuisine anyway) order beef or pork only where they are clearly on the menu so to be respectful know that BEEF carries sensitivity for Buddhists and Hindus and PORK for Muslims order either only where they are served (on the menu) never ask for them in a setting where they are avoided and when in doubt enjoy the excellent fish chicken egg and vegetarian dishes which are universally fine your thoughtfulness is exactly right
