Real option now in 2026 on the south coast. A handful of rental shops in Weligama, Ahangama and Hiriketiya offer electric scooters with realistic 60-80 km range, top speed around 50 km/h, and daily rental of around 1500-2500 LKR (less than a petrol scooter once you factor in fuel). Pros: silent, no fuel stops, cheaper, less police checkpoint attention than a battered petrol scooter. Cons: range anxiety on a hot day if AC mode drains battery faster, fewer charging points (you mostly charge at the guesthouse overnight), and a few models have weak hills if you head inland. YES, you still need the AAC recognition permit (IDP converted) with motorcycle class - the law applies to any motorised two-wheeler regardless of fuel type. The rental shop will check this and usually help you process the AAC permit if you have your IDP and home licence.

Practical tip: ALWAYS test the brakes and the throttle response of an EV before paying. Some older models have a throttle delay that surprises beginners on first ride. Try a slow loop in the rental forecourt.

Rented one for 5 days in Weligama. Charged each night, never ran out, locals smile because they are a novelty. Loved it.
