Dhowa Rock Temple (Dhow Rajamaha Vihara), located 6km north of Ella along the Badulla highway, is an ancient 7th-century Mahayana Buddhist rock hermitage. The temple’s most striking feature is a monumental 38-foot (11.5m) Buddha statue carved in high relief directly into the vertical face of a granite cliff. The carving remains visibly unfinished—rough tool chiseling is evident across the upper torso and head—suggesting sculptors abruptly abandoned work due to historical Pandya invasions from South India.
A small cave shrine adjacent to the cliff carving preserves ancient Kandyan-style tempera paintings depicting Jataka stories.
The temple is set in a quiet, shaded river valley accessible via a short stone pathway from the main Badulla road.
