The steep topography generates pronounced diurnal wind patterns. During sunny mornings, intense solar heating of the southern lowlands causes warm air to expand and rise up the steep gorge face as an anabatic updraft (reaching 15 to 25 knots). By late afternoon, mountain cooling in Ella reverses the airflow, sending cold, dense katabatic winds plunging downward through the gap. Commercial paragliding and scenic flights operate strictly in early morning thermal windows before cross-valley wind shear intensifies.
