Ella guesthouse after heavy rain — dengue worry if mosquitoes are inside the mosquito net gaps?
Storm last night, standing water in the garden, and I woke to bites on my hands where the net did not tuck. Reading dengue headlines and spiraling. Do travelers actually get dengue in Ella in shoulder season, and what is practical beyond panic — repellent, nets, clinic?

Dengue is present island-wide and often rises during and after rainy spells. Ella is not magically exempt. Day-biting Aedes love leftover containers and plant saucers. Practical steps: tuck or tape net gaps, use repellent with DEET/icaridin on exposed skin morning and afternoon, wear long sleeves at dusk, ask the host to empty standing water, and sleep under a intact net. If you get sudden high fever, severe headache, eye pain, or marked fatigue within about a week, see a clinic early and say you are a traveler in a dengue area — do not self-medicate with aspirin/ibuprofen if dengue is possible. I am not quoting hospital prices; care costs vary.
We emptied the plant trays and gave extra coils. Guests who tuck the net and use cream get fewer bites than guests who leave the balcony door open all evening.
Bought repellent, fixed the net with clips, watching for fever. Anxiety down one notch.
Same after Colombo rains. Nets plus cream beat reading case charts at 2am.
