The self-guided Ella Rock trek (approx. 8km round-trip, 3 to 4 hours) follows a specific sequence. Walk south along the active railway tracks from Ella station toward Kitalella station (2km). Just past Kitalella station, turn left down a small dirt path crossing a footbridge over the stream. Follow the path past tea fields; ignore local touts claiming the path ahead is closed or pointing down false trails to solicit guiding fees. The trail ascends steeply through eucalyptus forest before reaching the raw rock summit ridge overlooking the southern plains. Download an offline GPX trail map on Maps.me or AllTrails.
Start by 6:30 AM; afternoon rain clouds regularly roll over the summit cliff by 11:00 AM, obscuring views and making steep mud trails slick.
