Yes, it is very common and generally safe, but you must bring a strong headlamp. The railway tracks are uneven and there are gaps on the bridges. Trains do not run that early, so you will not be hit by a train. However, the path turning off the tracks into the tea estate is incredibly hard to find in the dark without a guide or offline GPS.

Watch out for stray dogs on the tracks. They usually just bark, but it can be scary in the pitch black.

Ask your homestay host to arrange a local guide for 2000 rupees. They will meet you at 4 AM and make sure you do not get lost in the rubber tree forest.
