Ella Rock trail safety during afternoon thunderstorms
5 Answers from travellers
It is extremely dangerous. Ella Rock is highly exposed, and lightning strikes are a severe hazard on the summit. Furthermore, the steep dirt path turning into the rubber tree forest becomes a muddy, slippery slide during heavy rain, making the descent treacherous. You must start your hike by 7 AM and be off the mountain by noon to avoid afternoon storms.
If you ever do get caught in a storm up there, do not stand under the lone pine trees at the summit.
Good call. We will stay at the cafes today and hike tomorrow.
Also, walking back along the railway tracks while it is pouring rain is miserable. Just go tomorrow morning.
Leeches also come out in their thousands the second it starts raining in that forest.
