People are offering us sold out train tickets at the station for triple the price. Is it safe.

Yes ticket scalping is a massive illegal operation at the Ella railway station. Touts aggressively buy up all the reserved seats online the minute they become available specifically to extort desperate tourists later.

It is highly advised not to purchase these tickets. Railway inspectors are increasingly checking identification and if the name printed on the scalped ticket does not match your passport they will invalidate the ticket and kick you off the train. If reserved seats are completely sold out simply walk to the official ticket counter an hour before departure and buy a completely legal unreserved second or third class ticket for pennies instead of fueling the scam.
