The endemic Sri Lankan Blind Snake (Gerrhopilus ceylonicus) is a fossorial, burrowing reptile adapted for life in subterranean soil and rotting logs. Growing to 15-20cm with a uniform cylindrical pinkish-brown body, its eyes are reduced to vestigial, light-sensitive black pigment spots beneath protective head scales. They inhabit deep, moist humus and subterranean termite galleries in wet-zone rainforests (Sinharaja and Kanneliya). Using a blunt, keratinized rostral shield on the snout, they push through loose earth, feeding on termite eggs, pupae, and ant larvae.
