The Eppawala phosphate deposit in Anuradhapura is a rare Proterozoic carbonatite body intruded along shear fractures into the high-grade Wanni Complex basement. The deposit formed via magmatic carbonate melts enriched in phosphorus, fluorine, and rare-earth elements. The parent rock comprises a coarse matrix of calcite and dolomite hosting euhedral, hexagonal chlor-fluorapatite crystals up to 30cm long. Tropical weathering leached out the soluble carbonate matrix over millions of years, leaving behind a residual leached mantle of insoluble, high-grade phosphate rock mined for agricultural fertilizer.
