Some sites say apply online before. Others say available on arrival. Which is real for a US passport?

BEFORE. Sri Lanka discontinued visa-on-arrival for most passports (including US) in 2023. Apply at eta.gov.lk 3-7 days before travel. Fee ~$50. Get email confirmation, print it (or save on phone), show at immigration. VOA still exists in theory but is more expensive ($60), longer queue on arrival, and airlines may not let you board without ETA proof. Just do it online. 15 minutes. It's approved within hours usually.

^ this. And use the official gov site eta.gov.lk NOT third-party sites charging $100+. Google 'Sri Lanka ETA' and there are dozens of scam sites at the top of results. Correct URL: eta.gov.lk. Nothing else.
