Elephant Transit Home (ETH) at Udawalawe - Sri Lanka's flagship ethical option. Government-run rehabilitation center for orphaned wild elephants; hatchlings raised there are released back to the wild. Public feeding times 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm - watch from behind a barrier as 30+ elephants come to feeding station and wander back to reserve. No riding, no touching, no chains. Combine with a Udawalawe National Park safari the same day for wild herds.
Also worth: Millennium Elephant Foundation (Kegalle) is a middle-ground option - retired working elephants, no rides, focus on retirement care. Not perfect but way better than Pinnawala. But Udawalawe ETH is the top choice.
