Roadside fruit stall family so let me load you up The must try fruits and how to eat them rambutan the red hairy ones twist or nip the skin and pop out the lychee like translucent sweet flesh eat around the seed addictive by the bagful mangosteen the queen of fruits the thick purple rind (press or cut it open) reveals snow white segments sweet and floral handle the staining rind carefully wood apple (divul) the hard grey shell cracked open the brown pulp scooped and usually beaten into a juice or a creamy drink with treacle an acquired tangy funky taste locals adore durian the king love it or hate it custardy pungent sold in season by the segment brace yourself try it once at a stall not in your room (the smell) The everyday heroes king coconut (thambili) the orange drinking coconut the stall hacks it open you drink the sweet sterile water straight from it the best hydration on the island papaya pineapple banana (so many varieties try the small sweet kolikuttu) and the spectacular avocado season for a treacle topped avocado Plus jackfruit (the giant the ripe sweet aril versus the green polos curry) the rose apple the sour green mango with chilli salt (a roadside snack) the beli the sapodilla The season question many tropical fruits fruit year round (banana papaya pineapple coconut always) but the prized ones are SEASONAL rambutan and mangosteen peak around the middle of the year so JUNE is genuinely a GOOD time you are arriving into the rambutan and mangosteen season durian also mid year ask the stall what is in season that week Where to buy the roadside stalls and the town markets are the best the stalls heaped with the seasonal fruit are freshest and cheapest the market for variety point and ask the stall holder will open and demonstrate the weird ones happily and let you taste The fruit hunters plan king coconut daily for hydration a bag of rambutan and mangosteen now while in season wood apple juice once durian once for the story and the seasonal market haul wherever you see a heaped stall

The sour green mango with chilli salt from a roadside stall is the snack I am now addicted to and the mangosteen genuinely earns the queen of fruits title the stall holder cut it open and I was converted
