We want to see ancient Sri Lankan culture but hate massive crowds. Are there hidden gem ruins or temples near the Cultural Triangle we can visit.

Skip the main path at Sigiriya and hike Pidurangala Rock next door. It has an ancient reclining Buddha statue and incredible views of Sigiriya itself, with half the tourists. Also, visit the Ritigala Forest Monastery. It is an ancient ascetic meditation complex built deep into the jungle mountain. The stone architecture is stunning and it is perfectly quiet.

Yapahuwa sounds exactly like what we are looking for. Thanks.

Yapahuwa is another amazing hidden gem. It has a massive stone staircase with lion carvings like Sigiriya but is usually totally empty.

Ritigala is beautiful, but the road to get there is very rough. Hire a good tuktuk driver.
