I am deeply fascinated by the Kadurugoda Viharaya ruins in Kantarodai. Why are there so many miniature coral stone stupas clustered together in the Northern Province, and is the site safely accessible to tourists.

It is completely accessible and a highly protected archaeological site. The clustered stupas are completely unique in Sri Lankan history. Some historians believe they house the remains of 60 Arhats (enlightened monks) who died of famine, while others link them to ancient burial practices from the Megalithic period.

Make sure you take your shoes off before entering the sandy compound. The coral stone architecture is completely different from the giant brick stupas you see down in Anuradhapura.

It is a very peaceful spot. You only need about 45 minutes to see the whole site, so I recommend pairing it with a trip to the nearby Keerimalai historical hot springs on the northern coast.
